Below are answers to common questions about the flu.
What are the symptoms of the flu?
Influenza, commonly called the flu, is a contagious viral illness that often comes on suddenly. Common symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, headache, sore throat, cough, congestion, and muscle pain. Some people, especially children, may also experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Because flu symptoms can resemble COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses, it’s important to be evaluated if you’re feeling significantly ill.
How do I know if I have the flu or just a cold?
The flu typically develops quickly and causes more severe symptoms than the common cold. High fever, chills, body aches, and extreme fatigue are much more common with influenza. A cold usually develops gradually and is more likely to cause mild congestion, sneezing, and a sore throat. Lansing Urgent Care offers rapid flu testing to help determine the cause of your illness.
When should I go to urgent care for the flu?
You should seek medical care if you have difficulty breathing, a persistent high fever, dehydration, chest pain, worsening symptoms, or if you’re at higher risk for complications because of your age, pregnancy, or an underlying medical condition. Early evaluation may also allow your provider to prescribe antiviral medication if appropriate.
Can urgent care test for the flu?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care offers rapid influenza testing with results available during your visit. Depending on your symptoms, your provider may also recommend COVID-19 testing or other diagnostic tests to determine the cause of your illness and ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment.
Can the flu be treated?
Yes. Most people recover with rest, fluids, and medications to relieve symptoms. If you’re evaluated within the first 48 hours after symptoms begin, your provider may prescribe an antiviral medication such as Tamiflu® to help shorten the duration and severity of your illness. Treatment recommendations are based on your symptoms, medical history, and risk factors.
How long does the flu last?
Most people begin feeling better within five to seven days, although fatigue and coughing can last for several weeks. Getting plenty of rest, staying hydrated, and following your provider’s recommendations can help support your recovery and reduce the risk of complications.
Is the flu contagious?
Yes. The flu spreads easily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. People are generally contagious beginning one day before symptoms develop and for about five to seven days afterward. Washing your hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home while you’re sick can help prevent spreading the virus to others.
Can I get the flu even if I received a flu shot?
Yes. Although the flu vaccine significantly reduces your risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications, it’s still possible to get the flu. However, people who receive the flu vaccine often experience milder symptoms and recover more quickly than those who are unvaccinated.
When should I go to the emergency room instead of urgent care for the flu?
Visit the emergency room immediately if you experience severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, seizures, bluish lips or face, persistent inability to stay awake, or signs of severe dehydration. These symptoms may indicate a serious complication that requires emergency medical treatment.
