What is an EKG?
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a quick, painless test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It helps healthcare providers detect irregular heart rhythms, signs of a previous or current heart attack, and other heart-related conditions. Lansing Urgent Care offers EKG testing to help evaluate patients with certain heart-related symptoms.
When do I need an EKG?
Your provider may recommend an EKG if you’re experiencing chest discomfort, heart palpitations, dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, an irregular heartbeat, or unexplained fatigue. An EKG may also be performed as part of a medical evaluation before certain procedures or for specific occupational health requirements.
Can urgent care perform an EKG?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care performs on-site EKGs to evaluate patients with appropriate symptoms. After reviewing your medical history and symptoms, your provider will determine whether an EKG is recommended and discuss the results with you.
What does an EKG detect?
An EKG can help identify abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), signs of a heart attack, previous heart damage, enlarged heart chambers, electrolyte abnormalities, and other conditions affecting the heart’s electrical activity. While an EKG provides valuable information, additional testing may sometimes be needed for a complete diagnosis.
How long does an EKG take?
The EKG itself usually takes only a few minutes to complete. Small adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest, arms, and legs to record your heart’s electrical activity. Including preparation and interpretation by your provider, the entire process is typically completed during your visit.
Is an EKG painful?
No. An EKG is completely painless and non-invasive. The electrodes simply stick to your skin and record your heart’s electrical signals. There are no needles, injections, or electrical shocks involved during the test.
Will I receive my EKG results during my visit?
Yes. In most cases, your provider will review your EKG immediately and discuss the findings with you during your visit. If the results suggest a more serious condition, additional testing or referral to a specialist may be recommended.
When should I go to the emergency room instead of urgent care?
Call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately if you have severe or crushing chest pain, pain spreading to your arm, jaw, neck, or back, difficulty breathing, sudden loss of consciousness, or symptoms that suggest a heart attack or stroke. These symptoms require immediate emergency medical attention and should not be delayed by visiting urgent care.
Can an EKG tell if I'm having a heart attack?
An EKG can often detect changes that suggest a current or previous heart attack. However, not every heart attack appears immediately on an EKG. Your provider will consider your symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and whether emergency evaluation or additional testing is needed.
Do I need an appointment for an EKG?
No. Walk-ins are welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. If you’re experiencing concerning symptoms, our providers can evaluate your condition, perform an EKG when appropriate, and determine whether additional treatment or emergency care is necessary.
