Diagnosis and Treatment for Cyclosporiasis
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. It can cause prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, and dehydration. The infection is most commonly spread through contaminated food or water and often requires medical treatment to fully resolve. Lansing Urgent Care provides prompt evaluation and treatment to help identify the cause of your symptoms and get you on the road to recovery.
Our experienced medical providers perform a thorough evaluation by reviewing your symptoms, medical history, and any recent travel, food, or water exposures that may increase your risk for cyclosporiasis. If appropriate, we can order stool testing to help confirm the diagnosis. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, preventing dehydration, and prescribing the appropriate medication when indicated.
With convenient walk-in access and extended hours, you can receive the care you need without waiting for a primary care appointment. If you’ve been experiencing persistent diarrhea or other symptoms that could be related to cyclosporiasis, our team is here to help you feel better as quickly as possible.

Cyclosporiasis Questions
We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about cyclosporiasis.
What is cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. The infection affects the small intestine and most commonly causes prolonged or recurring watery diarrhea.
What are the symptoms of cyclosporiasis?
The most common symptom is frequent watery diarrhea. Other symptoms may include stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, body aches, low-grade fever, and increased gas. Some people may become infected without developing symptoms.
How soon do cyclosporiasis symptoms begin?
Symptoms usually begin about one week after a person consumes contaminated food or water. In some cases, symptoms may begin sooner or take two weeks or longer to appear.
How do people get cyclosporiasis?
People become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the Cyclospora parasite. Outbreaks have frequently been associated with fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and salad products.
Is cyclosporiasis contagious from person to person?
Direct person-to-person transmission is considered unlikely. The parasite must remain in the environment for days or weeks after leaving an infected person before it becomes capable of infecting someone else.
How is cyclosporiasis diagnosed?
Cyclosporiasis is diagnosed through laboratory testing of a stool sample. Because standard stool testing may not automatically check for Cyclospora, the provider may need to specifically request the test. Several samples collected on different days may sometimes be needed.
How is cyclosporiasis treated?
The preferred treatment is a prescription antibiotic containing trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, commonly called TMP-SMX. A provider will determine whether this medication is appropriate based on the patient’s age, medical history, allergies, and other health factors.
Will cyclosporiasis go away without treatment?
Some otherwise healthy people eventually recover without medication, but the illness may last for several weeks. Symptoms may improve and then return, so medical evaluation is recommended when cyclosporiasis is suspected.
When should I seek medical care for possible cyclosporiasis?
Seek medical care if you have persistent watery diarrhea, especially if it lasts more than a few days or occurs with fatigue, appetite loss, weight loss, abdominal discomfort, or signs of dehydration. Prompt evaluation is especially important for children, older adults, pregnant patients, and people with weakened immune systems.
How can cyclosporiasis be prevented?
Wash your hands carefully, follow safe food-handling practices, rinse fresh produce under running water, and avoid food or water that may be contaminated. Washing produce can reduce risk, but it may not remove every Cyclospora parasite, and routine chemical sanitizers may not reliably kill it.
