Strep Questions
We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about strep throat.
What is strep throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A Streptococcus. It causes inflammation of the throat and tonsils and is most common in children and teenagers, although adults can develop it as well. Unlike a viral sore throat, strep throat requires antibiotic treatment to prevent complications and reduce the spread of infection.
What are the symptoms of strep throat?
Common symptoms of strep throat include a sudden, severe sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, swollen lymph nodes, red or swollen tonsils, and white patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils. Many people with strep throat do not have a cough or runny nose, which can help distinguish it from a viral illness.
How do I know if I have strep throat or just a sore throat?
Viral sore throats are often accompanied by coughing, congestion, hoarseness, or a runny nose. Strep throat is more likely to cause a sudden sore throat, fever, swollen glands, and painful swallowing without cold symptoms. Because symptoms can overlap, Lansing Urgent Care offers rapid strep testing to confirm the diagnosis.
Can urgent care test for strep throat?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care provides rapid strep testing with results available during your visit. If needed, your provider may also perform a throat culture or recommend additional testing to determine the cause of your symptoms and ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment.
How is strep throat treated?
Strep throat may be treated with antibiotics to eliminate the bacteria, reduce symptoms, shorten the duration of illness, and help prevent complications. It’s important to take the entire course of medication exactly as prescribed, even if you begin feeling better after a day or two.
How long is strep throat contagious?
Without antibiotics, people with strep throat can remain contagious for two to three weeks. After starting antibiotics, most people are no longer considered contagious after approximately 24 hours, provided their fever has resolved and they are feeling better.
When can I return to work or school after strep throat?
Most children and adults can return to work, school, or daycare after they’ve been taking antibiotics for at least 24 hours, are fever-free without medication, and are feeling well enough to participate in normal activities. Your provider can offer a return-to-school or work note if needed.
Can strep throat go away without antibiotics?
Although symptoms may eventually improve on their own, untreated strep throat can increase the risk of serious complications such as rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation, and abscess formation around the tonsils. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are recommended to reduce these risks.
When should I go to the emergency room for strep throat?
Seek emergency medical care if you experience difficulty breathing, are unable to swallow saliva, develop severe swelling of the throat or neck, have a muffled voice with worsening swelling, or experience signs of dehydration. These symptoms may indicate a serious complication requiring immediate treatment.
Do I need an appointment for strep throat testing?
No. Walk-ins are welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day evaluation, rapid strep testing, and treatment to help you recover quickly and safely.
