What types of wounds can urgent care treat?

Our providers will examine your injury, clean the wound, and recommend the most appropriate treatment to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection.
How do I know if my wound needs medical attention?
You should seek medical care if your wound is deep, won’t stop bleeding after 10 to 15 minutes of direct pressure, has jagged edges, exposes fat or muscle, was caused by a dirty or rusty object, or shows signs of infection. Early treatment can improve healing and reduce the risk of complications.
Can urgent care clean and dress wounds?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care provides professional wound cleaning, irrigation, bandaging, and dressing changes for many types of injuries. Thorough wound care helps remove debris, lower the risk of infection, and promote proper healing.
How do I know if my wound is infected?
Signs of a wound infection include increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus or foul-smelling drainage, worsening pain, fever, or red streaks spreading away from the wound. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should be evaluated promptly so treatment can begin before the infection worsens.
Will I need stitches, staples, or skin glue?
It depends on the depth, location, and type of wound. Some wounds heal well with simple dressings, while others require stitches, staples, Steri-Strips®, or medical skin adhesive. Your provider will determine the best closure method to promote healing and minimize scarring.
Do I need a tetanus shot after a wound?
Depending on the type of injury and when you last received a tetanus vaccine, your provider may recommend a tetanus booster. This is especially important for puncture wounds, animal bites, dirty wounds, or injuries caused by rusty or contaminated objects.
How should I care for my wound at home?
Follow your provider’s instructions carefully. In general, keep the wound clean and dry, change dressings as directed, avoid picking at scabs, and watch for signs of infection. Proper wound care can speed healing and reduce the likelihood of scarring or complications.
When should I go to the emergency room for a wound?
Seek emergency medical care if you have severe bleeding that won’t stop, a deep wound exposing bone or tendons, significant facial injuries, major burns, loss of sensation or movement, or wounds caused by serious trauma. These injuries often require emergency or surgical treatment.
How long does it take a wound to heal?
Healing time depends on the size, depth, and location of the wound, as well as your overall health. Minor cuts and scrapes often heal within one to two weeks, while larger or deeper wounds may take several weeks or longer. Your provider will explain what to expect and whether follow-up care is recommended.
