What is RSV?
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that infects the nose, throat, and lungs. While RSV often causes mild cold-like symptoms in healthy adults, it can lead to more serious illness in infants, young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic medical conditions.
What are the symptoms of RSV?
RSV symptoms commonly include a runny nose, congestion, cough, sneezing, fever, sore throat, wheezing, and decreased appetite. Infants may become unusually fussy, have difficulty feeding, or breathe more rapidly than normal. Because RSV symptoms overlap with the flu, COVID-19, and the common cold, medical evaluation may be recommended.
How do I know if I have RSV or just a cold?
RSV and the common cold share many symptoms, making them difficult to distinguish without an evaluation. RSV is more likely to cause wheezing, persistent coughing, and breathing difficulties, especially in infants and older adults. Can urgent care test for RSV?

How is RSV treated?
There is no specific cure for RSV. Most people recover with rest, fluids, fever-reducing medications, and supportive care. For young children or adults experiencing wheezing or breathing difficulties, additional treatments may be recommended based on the severity of symptoms.
How long does RSV last?
Most RSV infections improve within one to two weeks. However, coughing may continue for several weeks after the infection has resolved. Infants, older adults, and people with chronic lung or heart disease may experience a longer recovery or require additional medical care.
Is RSV contagious?
Yes. RSV spreads easily through respiratory droplets and by touching contaminated surfaces. People with RSV are generally contagious for three to eight days, although infants and individuals with weakened immune systems may spread the virus for a longer period. Frequent handwashing and staying home while sick can help prevent transmission.
When should I seek medical care for RSV?
You should visit urgent care if you or your child develop persistent fever, worsening cough, wheezing, dehydration, difficulty feeding, symptoms lasting longer than expected, or mild to moderate breathing difficulties. When should I go to the emergency room for RSV?
Seek emergency medical care immediately if you or your child has severe difficulty breathing, blue lips or fingertips, pauses in breathing, extreme sleepiness, inability to stay awake, severe dehydration, or signs of respiratory distress such as rapid breathing or the ribs pulling inward with each breath.
