What is pink eye?
Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the thin, clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, allergies, or irritants such as smoke or chemicals. Depending on the cause, pink eye may be contagious or noncontagious.
What are the symptoms of pink eye?
Common symptoms include redness in one or both eyes, itching, burning, excessive tearing, eye discharge, crusting around the eyelids, swollen eyelids, and a gritty feeling in the eye. Some people may also experience blurry vision that clears after wiping away drainage. If you have severe eye pain or vision loss, you should seek immediate medical attention.
Is pink eye contagious?
Viral and bacterial pink eye are highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with eye secretions or contaminated surfaces. Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious. Washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your eyes, and not sharing towels, makeup, or contact lenses can help prevent spreading the infection.
How do I know if my pink eye is viral, bacterial, or allergic?
Viral pink eye often causes watery eyes and may occur with a cold or other respiratory illness. Bacterial pink eye commonly produces thicker yellow or green discharge that may cause the eyelids to stick together. Allergic pink eye usually affects both eyes and causes significant itching, watery eyes, and other allergy symptoms. Our providers can examine your eyes and determine the most likely cause.
Can urgent care treat pink eye?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care evaluates and treats viral, bacterial, and allergic conjunctivitis. Depending on the cause, treatment may include prescription antibiotic eye drops, allergy medications, artificial tears, or supportive care to help relieve your symptoms and promote healing.
Do I need antibiotics for pink eye?
Not always. Antibiotic eye drops are only effective for bacterial conjunctivitis. Viral pink eye usually improves on its own with supportive care, while allergic conjunctivitis is treated with allergy medications. Your provider will determine the most appropriate treatment after examining your eyes.
How long does pink eye last?
Most cases of viral pink eye improve within one to two weeks. Bacterial conjunctivitis often begins improving within a few days after starting antibiotic eye drops. Allergic pink eye may continue until exposure to the allergen is reduced or appropriate allergy treatment is started.
When can I return to work or school after pink eye?
Return recommendations depend on the cause of your conjunctivitis. Many schools and employers allow return after 24 hours of antibiotic treatment for bacterial pink eye if symptoms are improving. Viral conjunctivitis may remain contagious for several days. Your provider can recommend when it’s safe for you or your child to return to normal activities.
When should I seek emergency care for an eye problem?
Go to the emergency room immediately if you experience severe eye pain, sudden vision loss, significant sensitivity to light, a chemical injury to the eye, or an eye injury involving a foreign object. These symptoms may indicate a more serious eye condition requiring emergency treatment.
