Frequently Asked
Fractures Questions

We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about fractures.

What are the signs and symptoms of a fracture?

Common signs of a fracture include sudden pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, difficulty moving the injured area, and pain when putting weight on the affected limb. In some cases, the injured area may appear deformed or make a grinding sensation during movement. If you think you may have broken a bone, Lansing Urgent Care can evaluate your injury and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Yes. Lansing Urgent Care evaluates many types of fractures using on-site digital X-rays. Our providers can diagnose many broken bones, stabilize the injury with a splint or brace, manage your pain, and arrange orthopedic follow-up when needed.

In most cases, yes. X-rays are the most common way to confirm a fracture and determine its location and severity. Imaging helps your provider develop the best treatment plan and determine whether you need a splint, brace, cast, or referral to an orthopedic specialist.

Many simple, closed fractures can be safely treated at urgent care. However, severe fractures involving significant deformity, exposed bone, loss of circulation, or major trauma should be treated in an emergency room. Our providers will determine the safest course of treatment based on your injury.

Not always. Some fractures heal well with a splint, brace, or walking boot instead of a traditional cast. The best treatment depends on the location and type of fracture, as well as your age and activity level. Your provider will recommend the most appropriate form of immobilization.

Most fractures heal within six to eight weeks, although healing time varies depending on the bone involved, the severity of the injury, your age, and your overall health. Some fractures may heal sooner, while more complex injuries can require several months of recovery.

You should avoid putting weight on a suspected fracture until you’ve been evaluated by a medical provider. Walking on a broken bone may worsen the injury, delay healing, or cause the fracture to shift out of place. Your provider will tell you when it’s safe to begin bearing weight again.

Go to the emergency room immediately if you have an open fracture, a bone protruding through the skin, severe deformity, uncontrolled bleeding, numbness, loss of circulation, or an injury caused by a major accident. These injuries require emergency evaluation and may need immediate surgery.

Some fractures can be managed completely at urgent care, while others require follow-up with an orthopedic specialist. If additional treatment or surgery is necessary, Lansing Urgent Care will help coordinate the appropriate referral and provide instructions for your recovery.

No. Walk-ins are always welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day evaluation, on-site X-rays, splinting, and fracture care to help you begin treatment as quickly as possible.
