Sprain Questions
We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about sprains.
What is a sprain?
A sprain is an injury that occurs when a ligament—the strong band of tissue connecting bones at a joint—is stretched or torn. Sprains commonly affect the ankle, wrist, knee, thumb, and other joints after a fall, twist, or sudden impact. Depending on the severity, symptoms can range from mild discomfort to significant pain and instability.
What are the symptoms of a sprain?
Common symptoms of a sprain include pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, limited range of motion, and difficulty using or putting weight on the injured joint. Some people also hear or feel a “pop” at the time of injury. Severe sprains may make the joint feel unstable or unable to support normal movement.
How do I know if I have a sprain or a fracture?
Sprains and fractures often cause similar symptoms, including pain, swelling, and bruising. However, fractures are more likely to cause severe pain, deformity, or an inability to bear weight. Because it’s often difficult to tell the difference without imaging, Lansing Urgent Care offers on-site digital X-rays to help diagnose your injury.
Can urgent care treat sprains?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care evaluates and treats sprains involving the ankles, wrists, knees, elbows, fingers, and other joints. Treatment may include X-rays, splinting, bracing, compression wraps, pain management, and recommendations for home care and follow-up if needed.
Should I use ice or heat for a sprain?
During the first 24 to 48 hours after a sprain, ice is generally recommended to help reduce pain and swelling. After the initial swelling has improved, heat may help relieve stiffness and improve flexibility. Your provider will recommend the best treatment based on your specific injury.
How long does a sprain take to heal?
Recovery depends on the severity of the sprain. Mild sprains often heal within one to three weeks, while moderate injuries may require several weeks. Severe ligament tears can take months to heal and occasionally require orthopedic evaluation or surgery. Your provider will discuss your expected recovery timeline during your visit.
What is the best treatment for a sprain?
Initial treatment usually follows the RICE method—Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation—to reduce pain and swelling. Depending on the injury, your provider may also recommend a brace, splint, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, or activity modifications to support healing.
When should I go to the emergency room for a sprain?
Seek emergency medical care if your injury causes severe deformity, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of circulation, numbness that doesn’t improve, an open wound, or if you’re unable to move the injured limb after major trauma. These symptoms may indicate a more serious injury than a simple sprain.
Will I need a brace or splint for a sprain?
Some sprains heal well with compression wraps alone, while others benefit from a brace, walking boot, or splint to protect the joint during healing. Your provider will recommend the most appropriate support based on the location and severity of your injury.
Do I need an appointment for sprain treatment?
No. Walk-ins are welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day evaluation, on-site X-rays , and treatment to help you recover safely and return to your normal activities as quickly as possible
