Frequently Asked
Cold Questions
We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about colds.
What is the difference between a cold and the flu?
The common cold and the flu share many symptoms, including congestion, coughing, and a sore throat. The biggest difference is that the flu usually comes on suddenly and often causes fever, chills, body aches, and significant fatigue. A cold tends to develop more gradually and is generally milder. If you’re unsure which illness you have, Lansing Urgent Care can evaluate your symptoms and, if needed, perform rapid flu and COVID testing to help determine the cause.
When should I go to urgent care for a cold?
Most colds improve within 7 to 10 days with rest and fluids. However, you should visit urgent care if your symptoms become severe, last longer than expected, or include difficulty breathing, fever, chest pain, dehydration, or worsening sinus pain. Our providers can evaluate your condition and determine whether another illness, such as pneumonia, the flu, or a bacterial infection, is causing your symptoms.
Can urgent care treat a common cold?
Yes. While there is no cure for the common cold, urgent care providers can help relieve symptoms and make sure a more serious illness isn’t present. Depending on your symptoms, treatment may include recommendations for over-the-counter medications, prescription medications to relieve coughing or congestion, hydration advice, and testing for illnesses like COVID-19, influenza, or strep throat when appropriate.
How long does a common cold usually last?
Most colds last between 7 and 10 days, although some coughs may continue for two to three weeks. Symptoms often peak during the first three days before gradually improving. If your symptoms are getting worse instead of better after a week, or you develop a high fever or shortness of breath, it’s a good idea to be evaluated by a medical provider.
Do I need antibiotics for a cold?
No. The common cold is caused by a virus, and antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. Taking antibiotics when they aren’t needed won’t help you recover faster and can contribute to antibiotic resistance. If your provider determines you’ve developed a bacterial sinus infection, ear infection, or another bacterial illness, antibiotics may be appropriate.
Can a cold turn into something more serious?
Yes. While most colds resolve on their own, some people develop complications such as sinus infections, ear infections, bronchitis, or pneumonia. Young children, older adults, and individuals with chronic medical conditions may be at higher risk. If your symptoms worsen, persist, or you experience trouble breathing, it’s important to seek medical care.
Can I get tested for COVID-19 or the flu during my visit?
Absolutely. Because cold symptoms often overlap with COVID-19 and influenza, our providers may recommend rapid testing based on your symptoms and current illness trends. Getting an accurate diagnosis helps ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment and guidance for returning to work, school, or daily activities.
Should I stay home if I have a cold?
Yes. Staying home while you’re sick helps prevent spreading viruses to others. You should also wash your hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid close contact with people who may be at higher risk of severe illness. If you need a work or school excuse, Lansing Urgent Care can provide documentation during your visit.
Can children be treated for colds at Lansing Urgent Care?
Yes. Our providers evaluate and treat patients of all ages with cold symptoms. We can help determine whether your child’s illness is simply a common cold or something that requires additional treatment, such as an ear infection, strep throat, RSV, influenza, or COVID-19.
Do I need an appointment for cold treatment?
No appointment is necessary. You can walk into any Lansing Urgent Care location or save your spot online before arriving. Our goal is to provide fast, convenient care so you can start feeling better as soon as possible.
