Frequently Asked
Splinting & Bracing Questions
We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible. Below are answers to common questions about splinting and bracing.
What injuries require a splint or brace?
Splints and braces are commonly used to stabilize injuries such as sprains, strains, minor fractures, dislocations, tendon injuries, and joint injuries. Immobilizing the injured area helps reduce pain, limit movement, and promote proper healing while preventing additional damage.
Can urgent care provide splints and braces?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care evaluates injuries and provides a variety of splints and braces for the hands, wrists, fingers, elbows, knees, ankles, and other joints when medically appropriate. Your provider will recommend the best type of support based on your injury and recovery needs.
How do I know if I need a splint or just an elastic wrap?
Minor sprains may only require rest, ice, compression, and elevation with an elastic wrap. However, if you have significant pain, swelling, bruising, difficulty bearing weight, or limited movement, a splint or brace may be needed to better protect the injured area. Our providers can evaluate your injury and recommend the appropriate treatment.
Can urgent care perform X-rays before applying a splint?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care offers on-site digital X-rays to evaluate suspected fractures and other injuries. Imaging helps determine whether a splint, brace, or another treatment option is most appropriate for your condition.
How long will I need to wear a splint or brace?
The length of time depends on the type and severity of your injury. Some sprains require only a few days of support, while fractures and more significant injuries may require immobilization for several weeks. Your provider will explain your treatment plan and any recommended follow-up care.
Can I remove my splint or brace to sleep or shower?
It depends on the type of splint or brace and your specific injury. Some removable braces can be taken off briefly, while others should remain in place until your provider instructs otherwise. Be sure to follow your provider’s recommendations to avoid delaying healing or worsening your injury.
What should I do if my splint feels too tight?
If your splint becomes painfully tight, causes numbness, tingling, increased swelling, or changes the color of your fingers or toes, loosen it if instructed to do so and seek medical evaluation promptly. These symptoms may indicate swelling that requires adjustment or further treatment.
When should I go to the emergency room instead of urgent care?
Seek emergency medical care if you have an open fracture, a bone protruding through the skin, severe deformity, loss of circulation, uncontrolled bleeding, numbness that doesn’t improve, or a serious injury following major trauma. These injuries often require emergency orthopedic care.
Can children receive splints and braces at urgent care?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care treats both children and adults with sprains, fractures, and other orthopedic injuries. Our providers can evaluate your child’s injury, obtain X-rays when appropriate, and apply the proper splint or brace to support healing.
Do I need an appointment for splinting or bracing?
No. Walk-ins are welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day evaluation, X-rays, and splinting or bracing when appropriate to help you recover as quickly as possible.
