Frequently Asked
UTI Questions

We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about UTIs.

What are the symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

Common symptoms of a urinary tract infection include a burning sensation when urinating, frequent urges to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pelvic pressure, lower abdominal discomfort, and passing only small amounts of urine. Some people may also notice blood in their urine. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, Lansing Urgent Care can evaluate your condition and recommend the appropriate treatment.

While symptoms can strongly suggest a urinary tract infection, a urine test is typically used to help confirm the diagnosis. Your provider will review your symptoms, perform an examination if needed, and may order a urinalysis or urine culture to determine whether an infection is present and guide treatment.

Yes. Lansing Urgent Care evaluates and treats urinary tract infections in both women and men. We offer on-site urine testing to help diagnose UTIs and can prescribe antibiotics when appropriate. Prompt treatment can help relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of the infection spreading to the kidneys.

Most bacterial urinary tract infections require antibiotics to eliminate the infection. Your provider will determine the most appropriate medication based on your symptoms, medical history, and urine test results. It’s important to complete the entire course of antibiotics, even if you begin feeling better after a few days.

While some very mild urinary symptoms may improve temporarily, most bacterial UTIs do not resolve without treatment. Delaying care can increase the risk of the infection spreading to the kidneys or causing more serious complications. If you suspect you have a UTI, it’s best to be evaluated promptly.

Yes. Although UTIs are more common in women, men can also develop urinary tract infections. Because UTIs are less common in men, additional evaluation may be recommended to identify any underlying conditions contributing to the infection.

Many people begin feeling better within 24 to 48 hours after starting antibiotics, although it’s important to finish the entire prescribed medication. Recovery time can vary depending on the severity of the infection and your overall health. If symptoms do not improve or worsen, follow-up medical evaluation is recommended.

Seek emergency medical care if you develop a high fever, chills, severe back or side pain, persistent vomiting, confusion, or signs of dehydration. These symptoms may indicate a kidney infection or another serious complication requiring immediate treatment.

Staying well hydrated, not delaying urination, practicing good personal hygiene, and urinating after sexual activity may help reduce your risk of future urinary tract infections. If you experience frequent UTIs, your provider can discuss additional prevention strategies based on your medical history.

No. Walk-ins are welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day evaluation, urine testing, and treatment so you can begin feeling better as quickly as possible.
