What started with a bold idea, a newly married couple, and a team of just four has grown into something far greater than Terry and Catherine Matthews could have imagined. The story of Lansing Urgent Care is one of family, hard work, community, and a belief that healthcare should always feel human. Twenty years later, those same values remain at the heart of who we are.
What do auto mechanics, urgent care clinics, and high-performance cars have in common? In Terry Matthews’ life, the answer is simple: build it well, serve people well, and never be afraid to take the long road.
Dr. Terry Matthews has never followed a conventional path and that may be exactly why his journey works. After high school, he packed up and moved to California to chase a childhood dream. He explored college, worked a variety of jobs, and ultimately pursued his love of cars by attending auto mechanic school. On his final day, a favorite instructor looked at him and said, “Matthews, this isn’t going to be your career and you’re destined for greater things.”
As it turns out, he was right.
Terry returned to Michigan, earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Oakland University, and pursued a master’s degree in molecular biology at Wayne State University School of Medicine. But even as he studied science at the cellular level, he knew his calling was more personal. He wanted to help people directly not just understand how things work, but help them work better.
That calling led him to Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. He completed his Family Medicine residency at Genesis Regional Medical Center in Flint and is board-certified in Family Medicine. Patients know Terry for his compassion, accessibility, and ability to make people feel heard. He believes medicine is as much about listening as it is about diagnosing and that belief has guided his entire career.
From the beginning, we weren’t trying to build the biggest urgent care company. We wanted to build a place where people would be treated the way we would want our own family to be treated.

In 2004, Terry married his wife, Catherine. Shortly after their wedding, he surprised her not with jewelry or flowers, but with a fully built website and business plan outlining his vision to open a healthcare business in Lansing.
They began planning Lansing Urgent Care on their first wedding anniversary, and in August 2006, they opened their first clinic. What started as a bold idea quickly grew into a regional healthcare leader.
Today, Lansing Urgent Care has expanded to eight clinics across the region, with a ninth location opening soon in Holt. Together, Terry and Catherine have created over 200 jobs within the Lansing community. Their work has been recognized with honors including the 2010 “Top 50 Companies to Watch” in Michigan, the 2011 Greater Lansing Entrepreneur of the Year in Healthcare, and Terry’s recognition as a 2025 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year® Regional Finalist.
In 2020, the Matthews expanded their vision with the launch of Skin Boss, continuing their commitment to helping people feel confident, healthy, and cared for inside and out.

But long before the clinics, the awards, and the expansion, there was a garage.
Terry’s lifelong love of cars began working alongside his father and uncle, where he learned that details matter, discipline matters, and pride in your work matters. Over time, that same passion was passed down to his son, Cole. Weekends in the garage turned into track days, restoration projects, and the kind of conversations that only happen over an open hood, wrench in hand.
In 2021, inspired by this generational bond, Terry and Cole opened The Speed Collection, a reflection of their shared enthusiasm for automotive excellence and a celebration of craftsmanship, performance, and the joy of building something together. For Terry, it has never just been about horsepower. It’s about connection. It’s about legacy. It’s about passing something meaningful forward.

In 2020, Catherine and Terry expanded their work in healthcare with the launch of Skin Boss Med Spa.
After years of helping patients feel better through urgent care, they saw an opportunity to help people feel confident and look their best as well. Skin Boss quickly became one of the region’s most recognized medical spas, earning the 2022 Greater Lansing Entrepreneurial Award and being named a 2023 Top 50 Company to Watch by Michigan Celebrates Small Business.
Across both brands, the mission remains consistent: care deeply, operate with excellence, and deliver experiences that make people feel seen, supported, and confident whether they are walking in not feeling their best or walking out glowing.
Building Lansing Urgent Care was never just about opening clinics. It was about creating something that could make a difference in people’s lives, for our patients, for the people who work beside us, and for the community we call home.

In the fall of 2021, entrepreneurship became even more personal when the Matthews family launched The Speed Collection alongside their son, Cole.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Cole shares a love for cars and an entrepreneurial drive that suggests this may, in fact, be genetic.
The venture reflects the family’s belief that building something together is one of life’s greatest privileges.
While the awards are meaningful, the greater responsibility has always been building organizations rooted in integrity, accountability, innovation, and heart.
Terry is a proud member of the Lansing Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau and remains deeply committed to supporting the Greater Lansing Food Bank and combating hunger in the community.
In addition to cars, Terry loves traveling with Catherine exploring new cities, cultures, and cuisines. He has been studying Spanish for years and has developed a true passion for the language and the connections it creates. He practices whenever he can, confidently ordering meals abroad and enthusiastically conversing occasionally inventing a tense or two along the way. Progress, after all, is part of the adventure.
At his core, Terry believes life isn’t about choosing one lane. It’s about building things that matter; clinics, businesses, engines, and community and doing it with heart, discipline, and a willingness to keep learning.
