What is mono?
Mononucleosis, often called mono, is a viral infection most commonly caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It’s sometimes referred to as the “kissing disease” because it spreads through saliva, but it can also be transmitted by sharing drinks, utensils, or through close personal contact. Mono is especially common in teenagers and young adults, although people of any age can become infected.
What are the symptoms of mono?
Common symptoms of mono include extreme fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, body aches, swollen tonsils, and loss of appetite. Some people also experience an enlarged spleen or liver. Because mono symptoms can resemble strep throat or the flu, medical evaluation is often needed for an accurate diagnosis.
How do I know if I have mono or strep throat?
Mono and strep throat both commonly cause a severe sore throat and swollen glands. However, mono usually causes significant fatigue that can last for weeks, while strep throat is caused by bacteria and often responds quickly to antibiotics. Can urgent care test for mono?

How is mono treated?

How long does mono last?

Can I play sports if I have mono?

When should I go to the emergency room for mono?
