Frequently Asked
Strains Questions
We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about strains.
What is a strain?
A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon, the tissue that connects muscle to bone. Strains occur when a muscle or tendon is stretched too far or torn, often during lifting, sports, repetitive movements, or sudden twisting motions. They commonly affect the back, neck, shoulders, hamstrings, and calves.
What are the symptoms of a muscle strain?
Common symptoms of a strain include pain, muscle tenderness, swelling, bruising, stiffness, muscle spasms, weakness, and difficulty moving the affected area. Depending on the severity, symptoms may range from mild soreness to significant pain that limits normal activities.
How do I know if I have a strain or a sprain?
A strain affects a muscle or tendon, while a sprain involves a ligament that connects bones at a joint. Strains often cause muscle pain, cramping, and weakness, whereas sprains usually result in joint pain, swelling, bruising, and instability. Because symptoms can overlap, Lansing Urgent Care can evaluate your injury and recommend the appropriate treatment.
Can urgent care treat muscle strains?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care evaluates and treats muscle strains involving the back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, and other areas of the body. Treatment may include a physical examination, pain management recommendations, activity modifications, splinting or bracing when appropriate, and referrals for additional care if needed.
Do I need an X-ray for a muscle strain?
Muscle strains cannot be seen on an X-ray. However, your provider may recommend an X-ray if there’s concern that your injury could involve a fracture or another bone injury. All Lansing Urgent Care locations offer on-site digital X-rays to help rule out broken bones when appropriate.
Should I use ice or heat for a muscle strain?
Ice is generally recommended during the first 24 to 48 hours after a strain to reduce pain and swelling. After the initial inflammation improves, heat may help relax tight muscles and reduce stiffness. Your provider can recommend the best treatment based on your specific injury.
How long does a muscle strain take to heal?
Mild muscle strains often improve within one to three weeks, while moderate strains may require several weeks to heal. Severe muscle or tendon tears can take several months and occasionally require orthopedic evaluation or surgery. Recovery depends on the location and severity of the injury.
What is the best treatment for a muscle strain?
Initial treatment usually includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), along with avoiding activities that worsen the injury. Your provider may also recommend over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, gentle stretching, physical therapy, or a brace depending on the severity of the strain.
When should I go to the emergency room for a muscle strain?
Seek emergency medical care if you experience severe pain after major trauma, inability to move the injured limb, significant deformity, uncontrolled bleeding, numbness, loss of circulation, or if you suspect a complete muscle or tendon rupture. These injuries may require emergency evaluation or surgery.
Do I need an appointment for strain treatment?
No. Walk-ins are welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day evaluation and treatment for muscle strains to help relieve pain, promote healing, and get you back to your normal activities as quickly as possible.
