What are the most common allergy symptoms?
Allergy symptoms can vary depending on the trigger but commonly include sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, itchy throat, coughing, skin rashes, and hives. Seasonal allergies are often triggered by pollen, while indoor allergies may be caused by dust mites, mold, or pet dander. If your symptoms are severe or persist despite over-the-counter medications, Lansing Urgent Care can help evaluate your condition and recommend treatment.
How do I know if I have allergies or a cold?
Allergies and colds share many symptoms, but allergies typically cause itchy eyes, sneezing, and clear nasal drainage without a fever. Colds are caused by viruses and often include sore throat, body aches, fever, and symptoms that improve within 7 to 10 days. Our providers can evaluate your symptoms and help determine the cause so you receive the most appropriate treatment.
When should I visit urgent care for allergies?
You should seek medical care if your allergy symptoms are severe, interfere with daily activities, last for several weeks, or are accompanied by wheezing, difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or signs of an infection. Can urgent care treat seasonal allergies?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care treats seasonal and environmental allergies by evaluating your symptoms and recommending appropriate treatment. Depending on your condition, your provider may recommend prescription medications, nasal sprays, antihistamines, or other therapies to help relieve your symptoms.
Can allergies cause a sore throat or cough?
Yes. Allergies often cause postnasal drip, which can irritate the throat and lead to coughing, throat clearing, or a scratchy sore throat. Unlike bacterial infections, allergy-related sore throats are usually not accompanied by fever or swollen lymph nodes.
What triggers seasonal allergies?
Seasonal allergies are commonly triggered by tree pollen in the spring, grass pollen during late spring and summer, and weed pollen, including ragweed, in the fall. Mold spores can also contribute to allergy symptoms throughout much of the year, especially during damp weather.
Can allergies become serious?
Most allergies are uncomfortable but not dangerous. However, severe allergic reactions called anaphylaxis can be life-threatening and require immediate emergency care. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, wheezing, dizziness, or loss of consciousness after exposure to an allergen.

Can allergies turn into a sinus infection?
Allergies themselves do not cause sinus infections, but ongoing nasal inflammation and congestion can block normal sinus drainage. This may increase the risk of developing a bacterial sinus infection if symptoms continue for an extended period.
