Frequently Asked
Ear Infection Questions
We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about ear infections.
What are the symptoms of an ear infection?
Common symptoms of an ear infection include ear pain, pressure, difficulty hearing, drainage from the ear, fever, and a feeling of fullness in the ear. Young children may also tug at their ears, become unusually fussy, have trouble sleeping, or experience decreased appetite. If your symptoms are severe or continue to worsen, Lansing Urgent Care can evaluate your condition and recommend the appropriate treatment.
How do I know if I have an ear infection or swimmer's ear?
While both conditions cause ear pain, an inner or middle ear infection typically causes pain deep inside the ear and may be accompanied by fever, congestion, or hearing changes. Swimmer’s ear affects the outer ear canal and often causes pain when the outer ear is touched or moved. Our providers can examine your ear to determine the cause and recommend the most effective treatment.
When should I go to urgent care for an ear infection?
You should visit urgent care if you have severe ear pain, hearing loss, drainage from the ear, symptoms lasting more than a couple of days, or a fever that accompanies your ear pain. Early treatment can help relieve discomfort and reduce the risk of complications.
Can urgent care diagnose and treat ear infections?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care providers can examine your ears using an otoscope to determine whether you have a middle ear infection, swimmer’s ear, or another condition. Based on your diagnosis, treatment may include antibiotics, prescription ear drops, or recommendations to help manage your symptoms.
Do all ear infections require antibiotics?
No. Some ear infections, especially those caused by viruses, may improve without antibiotics. Your provider will determine whether antibiotics are appropriate based on your symptoms, examination findings, age, and overall health. When antibiotics are needed, taking the full course as prescribed is important for recovery.
Can adults get ear infections?
Yes. Although ear infections are more common in children, adults can also develop middle ear infections or swimmer’s ear. Allergies, sinus infections, colds, and water trapped in the ear can all increase the risk of developing an ear infection.
How long does an ear infection last?
Many ear infections begin improving within a few days of treatment, although it may take one to two weeks for symptoms such as pressure or hearing changes to completely resolve. Your provider will discuss what to expect based on the type and severity of your infection.
Can an ear infection go away on its own?
Some mild ear infections resolve without antibiotics, particularly those caused by viruses. However, persistent pain, fever, worsening symptoms, or hearing loss should be evaluated by a medical provider to ensure appropriate treatment and prevent complications.
Can children be treated for ear infections at Lansing Urgent Care?
Yes. Ear infections are one of the most common reasons children visit urgent care. Our providers evaluate infants, children, and adults with ear pain and can recommend age-appropriate treatment to help relieve discomfort and promote healing.
Do I need an appointment for an ear infection?
No. Walk-ins are always welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer convenient, same-day evaluation and treatment so you can start feeling better as quickly as possible.
