Frequently Asked
Tick Removal
Questions

We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible. Below are answers to common questions about tick removal.

When should I remove a tick?

A tick should be removed as soon as it is discovered. The longer a tick remains attached, the greater the risk of transmitting certain tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease. Prompt removal helps reduce your risk of infection and allows the bite area to begin healing.

Yes. Lansing Urgent Care safely removes attached ticks and evaluates tick bites for signs of infection or tick-borne illness. If part of the tick remains embedded in the skin, our providers can often remove it while minimizing additional injury to the surrounding tissue.

Most tick bites do not result in Lyme disease, but symptoms to watch for include a bull’s-eye rash, fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and joint pain. These symptoms may develop several days to weeks after a tick bite. If you notice any of these signs, seek medical evaluation promptly.

If possible, place the tick in a sealed container or plastic bag after removal. While testing the tick is not routinely recommended, saving it may help your healthcare provider identify the type of tick if questions arise during your evaluation.

Not everyone needs antibiotics after a tick bite. In certain situations—such as a high-risk deer tick bite that has been attached for an extended period—your provider may recommend preventive antibiotics. Your treatment will depend on the type of tick, how long it was attached, and your symptoms.

We don’t recommend removing a tick yourself because it’s important to ensure the entire tick, including the mouthparts, is removed to help reduce the risk of infection and other complications. If possible, visit Lansing Urgent Care for safe tick removal and evaluation.

If you’re unable to get to Lansing Urgent Care promptly, you can remove the tick yourself by following these steps:

  • “Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.”
  • “Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Avoid twisting or jerking the tick, as this can cause parts of the tick to remain in the skin.”
  • “Do not crush the tick or use home remedies such as petroleum jelly, nail polish, alcohol, or heat to try to make it detach.”
  • “After removal, clean the bite area and your hands thoroughly with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.”

If you’re unable to remove the entire tick or develop symptoms such as a rash, fever, fatigue, or worsening redness around the bite, visit Lansing Urgent Care for evaluation and treatment.

Wash the area with soap and water, apply an antiseptic, and monitor the bite for redness, rash, or signs of infection over the next several weeks. If you develop flu-like symptoms, joint pain, fever, or a spreading rash, seek medical evaluation as soon as possible.

Most tick bites do not require emergency care. However, seek immediate medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, facial swelling, confusion, chest pain, severe weakness, or signs of a severe allergic reaction following a tick bite.

Yes. Lansing Urgent Care evaluates and treats tick bites in both children and adults. Our providers can safely remove ticks, assess the bite, and determine whether additional treatment or follow-up is recommended.

No. Walk-ins are always welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day tick removal and evaluation to help reduce the risk of complications and provide peace of mind.
