Frequently Asked
Sinus Infection Questions

We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about sinus infections.

What are the symptoms of a sinus infection?

A common cold usually improves within 7 to 10 days and often causes clear nasal drainage. A sinus infection may be more likely if your symptoms last longer than 10 days, improve and then suddenly worsen, or include significant facial pain, pressure, or thick nasal discharge. Our providers can help determine the cause of your symptoms during your visit.

Common symptoms include a persistent cough, mucus production, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, fatigue, and mild fever. The cough often lasts longer than other symptoms and may continue for several weeks after the infection has resolved.

You should visit urgent care if your symptoms last more than 10 days, worsen after initially improving, include severe facial pain, persistent fever, swelling around the eyes, or interfere with your daily activities. Early evaluation can help determine whether your infection is viral or bacterial and whether treatment is needed.

Yes. Lansing Urgent Care evaluates and treats both viral and bacterial sinus infections. Depending on your symptoms and examination, treatment may include recommendations for over-the-counter medications, nasal sprays, decongestants, or antibiotics when a bacterial infection is suspected.

No. Most sinus infections are caused by viruses and improve without antibiotics. Antibiotics are generally recommended only when symptoms suggest a bacterial infection, such as symptoms lasting more than 10 days, severe symptoms, or worsening after initial improvement. Your provider will determine the most appropriate treatment based on your condition.

Viral sinus infections often improve within 7 to 10 days. Bacterial sinus infections may last longer but usually begin improving within a few days after starting appropriate treatment. Some congestion or coughing may continue briefly even after the infection begins to resolve.

Allergies do not directly cause sinus infections, but ongoing nasal inflammation and congestion can block the normal drainage of the sinuses. This can increase the risk of developing a bacterial sinus infection if symptoms persist for an extended period.

Yes. Many viral sinus infections improve without prescription medication. However, if your symptoms continue to worsen, last longer than expected, or become severe, medical evaluation is recommended to determine whether additional treatment is necessary.

Seek emergency medical care if you experience swelling around one or both eyes, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, difficulty breathing, or a high fever accompanied by severe facial swelling. These symptoms could indicate a rare but serious complication requiring immediate treatment.

No. Walk-ins are welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers evaluate sinus infections every day and offer convenient, same-day treatment to help relieve your symptoms as quickly as possible.
