Frequently Asked
Sore Throat Questions
We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible.
Below are answers to common questions about sore throats.
What causes a sore throat?
A sore throat can be caused by viral infections such as the common cold, influenza, or COVID-19, as well as bacterial infections like strep throat. Allergies, postnasal drip, dry air, acid reflux, and irritants such as smoke can also lead to throat pain. Lansing Urgent Care can evaluate your symptoms to determine the underlying cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
How do I know if I have strep throat or a viral sore throat?
Strep throat often causes a sudden, severe sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and painful swallowing without a cough. Viral sore throats are more likely to occur with coughing, congestion, runny nose, or hoarseness. Because symptoms can overlap, a rapid strep test may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
When should I go to urgent care for a sore throat?
You should visit urgent care if your sore throat is severe, lasts longer than a few days, is accompanied by a high fever, difficulty swallowing, swollen glands, white patches on your tonsils, or if you’re concerned about strep throat. Prompt evaluation can help identify the cause and begin appropriate treatment.
Can urgent care test for strep throat?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care offers rapid strep testing to determine whether your sore throat is caused by a bacterial infection. Depending on your symptoms, your provider may also recommend testing for COVID-19, influenza, or mononucleosis to help identify the source of your illness.
Do all sore throats require antibiotics?
No. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, which do not respond to antibiotics. Antibiotics are typically prescribed only when testing confirms strep throat or another bacterial infection. Your provider will determine the most appropriate treatment based on your symptoms and test results.
How long does a sore throat last?
Viral sore throats usually improve within five to seven days with rest, fluids, and supportive care. Strep throat often begins improving within 24 to 48 hours after starting antibiotics. If your symptoms persist or worsen, you should be reevaluated by a medical provider.
Can a sore throat be caused by allergies?
Yes. Allergies frequently cause postnasal drip, which can irritate the throat and result in soreness, frequent throat clearing, or coughing. Allergy-related sore throats are often accompanied by sneezing, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion rather than fever or swollen tonsils.
Can children be treated for sore throats at urgent care?
Yes. Our providers evaluate children and adults with sore throats every day. We can perform rapid strep testing when appropriate and recommend age-appropriate treatment to help relieve symptoms and determine whether antibiotics are needed.
When should I go to the emergency room for a sore throat?
Seek emergency medical care if you have difficulty breathing, are unable to swallow saliva, experience severe swelling of the throat or neck, develop a muffled voice with significant swelling, or have signs of a severe allergic reaction. These symptoms may require immediate emergency treatment.
Do I need an appointment for sore throat treatment?
No. Walk-ins are always welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day evaluation, rapid testing, and treatment to help you feel better as quickly as possible.
