Abscess Drainage Questions
What is a skin abscess?
A skin abscess is a pocket of infection and pus that develops beneath the skin. It may appear as a painful, swollen, red, or warm lump.
Can urgent care drain an abscess?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care can evaluate many skin abscesses and perform drainage when the procedure is medically appropriate.
How do I know if an abscess needs to be drained?
An abscess may require drainage if it is painful, swollen, growing, filled with pus, or not improving. A provider must examine it to determine the best treatment.
What happens during abscess drainage?
The area is cleaned and numbed before the provider creates a small opening that allows the infected fluid to drain. A dressing or packing may be placed afterward.
Does abscess drainage hurt?
A local anesthetic is generally used to numb the area and reduce discomfort. You may still notice pressure during the procedure and soreness afterward.
Are antibiotics needed after abscess drainage?
Not every abscess requires antibiotics. Your provider will decide based on the infection’s size, location, surrounding redness, symptoms, and your medical history.
Can I drain an abscess myself?
No. Squeezing, cutting, or attempting to drain an abscess at home can spread the infection and damage surrounding tissue. It should be evaluated by a medical provider.
How long does an abscess take to heal after drainage?
Healing time varies based on the abscess’s size, location, and severity. Following wound care instructions and attending recommended follow up visits can support proper healing.
When should I seek immediate care for an abscess?
Seek prompt care for fever, spreading redness, red streaks, rapidly increasing pain, facial swelling, or an abscess near the eye, spine, genitals, or rectum.
Do I need an appointment for abscess drainage?
No. Walk ins are welcome. However, the provider must evaluate the abscess before determining whether drainage can safely be performed at urgent care.
