What is a TB test?
A tuberculosis (TB) test checks whether you’ve been exposed to the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. TB testing is commonly required for employment, healthcare workers, schools, childcare providers, volunteers, and certain licensing or regulatory requirements. Lansing Urgent Care offers TB testing for both occupational and personal health needs.
Who needs TB testing?
TB testing is often required for healthcare workers, nursing students, teachers, childcare employees, volunteers, long-term care staff, and individuals beginning employment in certain industries. Your employer, school, or licensing agency will let you know if TB testing is required.
What types of TB tests are available?
There are two common types of TB tests: the Tuberculin Skin Test (PPD) and a TB blood test (IGRA). The type of test recommended depends on your employer’s requirements, medical history, vaccination history, and other individual factors.
What is a PPD skin test?
A PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) skin test involves placing a small amount of testing solution just beneath the skin of your forearm. You’ll need to return to Lansing Urgent Care 48 to 72 hours later so a medical provider can examine the injection site and interpret the results.
How long does TB testing take?
The PPD skin test takes only a few minutes to administer. However, you’ll need to return within 48 to 72 hours to have the test read. If you’re receiving a TB blood test, the blood draw is completed during your visit, and results are typically available within a few business days.
Can Lansing Urgent Care provide TB testing for employment or school?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care performs TB testing for employers, healthcare organizations, schools, colleges, childcare facilities, volunteer organizations, and licensing agencies. We also complete any required documentation during your visit.
What happens if my TB test is positive?
A positive TB test does not necessarily mean you have active tuberculosis disease. It means you’ve likely been exposed to the bacteria at some point. Additional evaluation, such as a chest X-ray and further medical assessment, may be recommended to determine whether you have latent TB infection or active TB disease.
Can I receive a TB test if I've had the BCG vaccine?
Yes. If you’ve received the BCG vaccine, commonly given in many countries outside the United States, your provider may recommend a TB blood test (IGRA) because it’s less likely to be affected by prior BCG vaccination than a skin test.
Do I need an appointment for TB testing?
All Lansing Urgent Care locations accept walk-ins for TB testing, although scheduling an appointment may help reduce your wait time. If you’re receiving a PPD skin test, remember you’ll need to return within 48 to 72 hours for the test to be read.
