What types of burns can urgent care treat?
Lansing Urgent Care treats many minor burns, including first-degree burns, small second-degree burns, sunburns, scalds from hot liquids, minor chemical burns, and contact burns. Our providers evaluate the severity of your burn and recommend the most appropriate treatment to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection.
How do I know if my burn is serious?
Minor burns usually cause redness, pain, and sometimes small blisters. More serious burns may involve large blisters, white or charred skin, numbness, severe swelling, or burns covering a large area of the body. If you’re unsure about the severity of your burn, it’s best to have it evaluated by a medical provider.
When should I go to urgent care for a burn?
You should visit urgent care if your burn is painful, blistering, appears infected, covers more than a few inches, or isn’t improving after several days. Burns on the hands, feet, face, or joints should also be evaluated because they can affect healing and function.
Can urgent care treat second-degree burns?
Yes. Many superficial second-degree burns can be treated at Lansing Urgent Care. Your provider will clean the wound, remove damaged tissue if necessary, apply appropriate dressings, and provide instructions for home care to help prevent infection and promote healing.
Should I pop a burn blister?
No. Burn blisters help protect the underlying skin while it heals. Popping a blister increases the risk of infection and may delay healing. If a blister breaks on its own, keep the area clean and covered, and have it evaluated if you notice increasing redness, swelling, or drainage.
How should I treat a burn before coming to urgent care?
Cool the burned area under cool running water for about 20 minutes as soon as possible after the injury. Avoid using ice, butter, toothpaste, or home remedies that can further damage the skin. Cover the burn loosely with a clean, dry bandage and seek medical evaluation if needed.
Will I need antibiotics for a burn?
Not always. Most minor burns do not require oral antibiotics unless there are signs of infection. Your provider may recommend antibiotic ointment, specialized dressings, or other treatments depending on the depth and severity of your burn.
When should I go to the emergency room for a burn?
Go to the emergency room immediately if you have a large burn, burns involving the face, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints, electrical burns, significant chemical burns, difficulty breathing after a burn, or burns that appear white, black, or deeply charred. These injuries often require specialized emergency or burn center care.
How long does it take a burn to heal?
Healing time depends on the severity of the burn. First-degree burns often heal within one week, while superficial second-degree burns may take two to three weeks. Your provider will discuss your expected recovery time and provide instructions to minimize scarring and infection.
