How do I know if I need stitches?
You may need stitches if your cut is deep, has edges that won’t stay together, continues bleeding after 10 to 15 minutes of direct pressure, exposes fat or other tissue, or is located on the face, hands, or over a joint. If you’re unsure, Lansing Urgent Care can evaluate your injury and determine the best way to close the wound.
Can urgent care provide stitches?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care treats many cuts and lacerations using stitches, skin adhesive (medical glue), Steri-Strips®, or staples, depending on the location, depth, and severity of the wound. Our goal is to help your wound heal properly while minimizing the risk of infection and scarring.
How soon should I get stitches after an injury?
In most cases, cuts should be evaluated as soon as possible—ideally within 6 to 12 hours of the injury. Some wounds may still be safely closed after this timeframe depending on the location and risk of infection. The sooner your wound is evaluated, the more treatment options are available.
Will getting stitches hurt?
Before repairing your wound, your provider will numb the area with a local anesthetic to help keep you comfortable. Most patients feel only a brief pinch from the numbing medication and little to no pain during the procedure itself.
How do I care for my stitches after the procedure?
Keep the wound clean and dry as instructed by your provider. Follow all wound care instructions, avoid activities that could reopen the wound, and watch for signs of infection such as increasing redness, swelling, warmth, drainage, or fever. Proper wound care helps reduce scarring and promotes faster healing.
When should stitches be removed?
The timing depends on where the wound is located. Facial stitches are often removed within 5 to 7 days, while stitches on the arms, legs, hands, feet, or joints may remain in place for 10 to 14 days or longer. Your provider will tell you when to return for removal based on your injury.
Can urgent care remove stitches that were placed somewhere else?
Yes. Lansing Urgent Care can remove stitches placed by another urgent care, emergency room, hospital, or surgical provider. Before removing them, we’ll examine your wound to ensure it has healed properly and is ready for suture removal.
When should I go to the emergency room instead of urgent care?
Visit the emergency room if your injury involves uncontrolled bleeding, exposed bone, tendons or muscles, significant facial trauma, a deep puncture wound to the chest or abdomen, loss of sensation or movement, or a severe crush injury. These injuries often require emergency or surgical care.
Do I need a tetanus shot after a cut?
Depending on the type of wound and when you last received a tetanus vaccine, your provider may recommend a tetanus booster. This is especially important for dirty wounds, puncture wounds, animal bites, or injuries caused by rusty or contaminated objects.
Do I need an appointment for stitches or laceration repair?
No. Walk-ins are welcome at Lansing Urgent Care, and you can also save your spot online before arriving. Our providers offer same-day wound evaluation and repair to help reduce the risk of infection, improve healing, and minimize scarring.
